Destiny 2 update to deliver 4K, HDR on Xbox One X and PS4 Pro by Samit Sarkar

Destiny 2 developer Bungie will soon update the game on consoles to add support for 4K resolution and high dynamic range (HDR) color, the studio announced yesterday.

The patch will arrive Dec. 5 alongside the launch of Destiny 2’s second “season” of content and its first expansion, Curse of Osiris.

In case you were wondering about the power differences between the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X, Destiny 2 will be a good example. On an Xbox One X, the game will run at 4K, full stop. On a PS4 Pro, the game will run in “adaptive 4K resolution,” which basically means “up to 4K resolution” — the console dynamically scales the game’s resolution up and down depending on how busy things are, with an eye on maintaining frame rate. (Destiny 2 is locked at 30 fps on both consoles, even if you’re playing on the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X.)

For comparison’s sake, the Windows PC version of Destiny 2, which launched in late October, already supports 4K and HDR. Until now, Bungie had only confirmed that it would add HDR to Destiny 2 on PS4; neither the studio nor publisher Activision had said anything about Xbox One support, perhaps because of the tight marketing contract that Activision maintains with Sony for exclusive content on PS4. If Bungie wasn’t ready to discuss details of Destiny 2’s PS4 Pro and Xbox One X enhancements until yesterday, that’s fine, but if that wasn’t the case, then it was silly for the studio to act as if the Xbox One version doesn’t exist.

Announced earlier this year, Sony are set to increase the costs of their subscriber plans, which will affect all PS4 gamers who play a lot of online titles.

The new changes will only affect players in Europe, but time is running out for those who are hoping to save their cash for another 12 months. The company emailed subscribers confirming that the price of PS Plus memberships is increasing from August 31.

Annual PlayStation Plus memberships will increase from £39.99 to £49.99, quarterly prices will rise from £14.99 to £19.99, while monthly prices will go up from £5.99 to £6.99.

"As you are an existing member, this means that all recurring subscription fees payable by you on or after 31 August 2017 will be charged at the new price," Sony confirmed.

There is, however, a way to save money by stacking PS Plus subscriptions.

PlayStation Plus costs will remain the same up until the end of August, so PS4, PS3 and PlayStation Vita owners can purchase memberships at the existing prices and stack them for the future.

"Up until 31 August 2017, you may purchase a PlayStation Plus subscription at the current price, which will then be added (or “stacked on”) to your current membership period," sony explains.

The company also gave fans a few tips on cancelling PlayStation Plus memberships before the price increase goes live.

"Earlier this year, Sony confirmed the PS5 in a roundabout way by commenting that the Japanese gaming giant WILL release a next-generation successor to the PS4.

PlayStation boss Shawn Layden confirmed that the PlayStation 5 will be released during an interview with the German website, Golem, stating that a PS5 “is coming” but it will “probably be some time” before it’s released

However, a new interview with Jim Ryan, Global Head of Marketing and Sales at PlayStation as well as CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Europe, has thrown that into doubt.as Ryan seemed to hint that the days of huge console cycles were over, with a move more towards regular console updates like the PS4 Pro a more attractive proposition.

Speaking in the latest EDGE magazine, Ryan seemed to hint that the days of huge console cycles were over, with a move more towards regular console updates like the PS4 Pro a more attractive proposition.

Ryan was specifically asked about hardware refreshes and whether or not the hardware refreshes released mid-generation - such as PS4 Pro and Xbox One X) could become a regular fixture."
