Apple's status in the education sector has tumbled in recent years.

Apple mobile operating system iOS ended 2016 with a 14% share of new mobile devices used in Kindergarten through 12th grade, down from 26% in 2014, according to new data from research firm Futuresource Consulting. Meanwhile, Apple's computer-only operating systems OS X and macOS fell to a 5% share in 2016 from 8% two years earlier.

As Apple's (AAPL, +0.59%) hold on the education world declined, Google (GOOG, -0.21%) has grown the share of its cloud-based operating system, Chrome OS, to 58% from 38% in 2014. Microsoft stabilized the market share of its Windows operating system in education last year at 22%, flat from 2015 and down from 25% in 2014.

In late 2016, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) released its first all-in-one desktop computer lineup known as the Surface Studio. The systems represent essentially ultra-premium Windows-based all-in-one computers with price tags to match (the systems start at $2,999 and go up from there).

At the price points Microsoft is asking, these systems were never going to be particularly high-volume products. However, per a recent report from DigiTimes, demand for these systems is better than expected.

30,000 in the fourth quarter of 2016
The report claims that initial unit shipment estimates for the Surface Studio systems during the fourth quarter of 2016 were just 15,000 due to their high price points. However, DigiTimes says that shipments "may reach 30,000 units based on orders," citing "Taiwan-based supply chain makers."

For the first quarter of 2017, DigiTimes says, again citing those supply chain sources, Microsoft "has ordered 30,000 units to be shipped in the first quarter of 2017."

The MIT report states that "Today Apple contractors assemble iPhones in seven factories—six in China and one in Brazil. If the phones were assembled in the U.S. but Apple still sourced components globally, how much would that change the price of the device?

According to IHS, a market analyst, the components of an iPhone 6s Plus, which sells for $749, cost about $230. An iPhone SE, Apple's newest model, sells for $399, and IHS estimates it contains $156 worth of components.
